It’s not long now until the final event of the IBA World Tour.
Who’s going to win the event and who’s going to be crowned World Champ?
The International Bodyboarding Association (IBA) is pleased to announce that the IBA 2012 Fronton event has secured the sponsorship support of some of the industry’s leading brands. NMD & VS have committed to the Naming Sponsorship of the event, which is shaping up as one of the biggest events in the history of Bodyboarding.
The NMD/VS Fronton Pro 2012 is event 8 of 8 of the IBA Grand Slam Series for the undisputed World Championship of Bodyboarding. Going into the final event, the world title race has come down to only 2 athletes – Jeff Hubbard (Hawaii – USA) the current tour leader, and Dave Winchester (Sydney – Australia). In order for Dave Winchester to secure his first World Championship Title, he needs a finals result (1st or 2nd) at this event if Jeff Hubbard is to fall short of progressing to the semi-final (5th) otherwise if Jeff Hubbard progresses to the semi-finals then he will be crowned the World Champion for the 3rd time in his career. The top 16 will also be battling it out at Fronton as they all try and secure their position for the 2013 GSS World Tour.
The venue for this amazing showdown is the infamous El Fronton, located in Galdar, Gran Canaria. The IBA has been working closely with the support of the local authorities to ensure the stage is set for a memorable contest at the wave that is often regarded as the ‘perfect canvas for performance Bodyboarding’. Holding waves up to 15 feet and serving up lefts and rights, with hollow barrels and sections made for boosting, the Bodyboarding world collectively holds its breath to see what Mother Nature will deliver.
The official contest window is from December 7 – 16, 2012, with event check in at the La Guancha event site on December 6th between 12 noon and 4pm. All riders are required to check in, including the top 24 IBA contracted riders, Wildcards and riders wishing to enter the trials event.
There will be 8 spots available in the main event for riders to progress from the trials event that will be held from the 6th December 2012 at La Guancha. The treasured spots in the top 32 of the IBA 2012 NMD/VS Fronton Pro are not the only thing that will make the Fronton Trials one of the most exciting of the year. There are 12 riders from the Global Qualifying Series (GQS) still in contention for the 8 available IBA top 24 contracts for 2013.
The event Wildcards for the IBA 2012 NMD/VS Fronton Pro will be announced in the coming days but we do know the sponsor’s wildcard is confirmed and it’s the 2011 Fronton Champ – Jason Finlay (Australia).
Managing Director of the IBA, Gregg Taylor, commented, “The script could not have been written better for the final event of what has been a revolutionary year for the IBA GSS World Tour and the GQS Tour. The IBA is very grateful for the support of the industry-leading brands of NMD & VS. It is industry support such as this that will underpin the ongoing growth of the IBA World Tour and the sport of Bodyboarding”.
NMD/ VS founder Nick Mesritz stated: “NMD is proud to continue its association with the IBA Fronton Pro for a second straight year. Once again the world title race will be decided in the Canary Islands and with only 60 points separating Dave Winchester and Jeff Hubbard, the bodyboarding world will be glued to the live webcast to see who will be crowned 2012 IBA World Champion. There’s no better way to end what has been an intriguing year than to watch these amazing athletes push the limits in the heaving slabs of El Fronton.”
