The second day of the Sintra Portugal Pro – the fifth and final stage of the World Tour of Bodyboarding (23-28 September) – has been contested and the male title race remains alight with the top 14 premiering in competition (and hence the title contenders: namely, Pierre Louis Costes, Uri Valadao, Jared Houston and Amaury Lavernhe.

Within this quartet, Uri Valadao and Jared Houston were the big performers of the day, winning their third round heats. It was a non-playoff round, where the winner is rewarded by passing directly to the fifth round, while the other three athletes have to play a qualification game. Jared made one of the most impressive showings of the day with a total of 16.5 (8.00 + 8.50). The South African beat 2013 Sintra champ, Lucas Nogueira (Bra), Provençal Corentin (Fra) and Portugal’s Carnival Gaston, catapulting him to the fifth round. Similarly, Uri Valadao went ahead of the competition by beating Jeff Hubbard, Diego Cabrera and under-18 European Champion, Porgugal’s Miguel Adão.

Less fortunate were Pierre Louis Costes and Amaury Lavernhe. The two Frenchmen, both former World Champions, failed to finish second or higher in their heats with Pierre facing Portugal’s João Manuel Centeno Barciela and Brazilian Roberto Bruno, who won the heat. “It was a tough heat and now I have to go up against Manuel Centeno and Helliton Loureiro, two tough competitors,” Pierre confessed.

At the opposite extreme, Uri Valadao welcomed the victory in his heat and the benefit of advancing directly to round 5. “It was great to come in and shake the pressure of the first heat,” Uri said. “Thank God I won and I’m feeling very well. I love surfing in Sintra. I’ve won here three times and I feel very comfortable here.”

Check-in tomorrow is at 7:45 am with a probable start of the men’s competition, starting with the round 4.
