Forster Tuncurry Bodyboard Association

Wrap-up by FTBA president Aaron Dodds

FTBA 2015 RD2 proudly bought to us by Forster Surf & Sport and The Bellevue Hotel.

Forster Tuncurry Bodyboarders Round 2 (March 29) went down at North Boomerang with a perfect autumn day, two-to-three foot plus of south swell and light north-east winds. There were wedges in the corner and some magic banks in front providing entertaining left and rights. The only hiccup was the intense backwash. The sun was out, buns, guns and bellies were out, families were on the beach, the BBQ was fired up with the best sausages, bacon and eggs, rissoles, as well as the the freshest cakes.

Our Junior Men hit the water first, with Flynn Dunn making the most of a few heavy three-foot sections. All the Juniors early struggled with sticking rolls and flips.

Open Men saw the tide dropping and a small change in swell. New member Alex Martin and Thomas Donnelly knocked a few more well-known prone riders out. Adam Cheers, on consecutive waves in his semi, locked in inverts, ARSs, float reverses and rolls, showing everyone he’s a real contender for the 2015 Championship.

In the Groms Toby Elliott improved out of sight, while Karsyn and Jedd got some ripper waves early. The Selmes twins, Mitch and on-fire Romeo Rory Hill battled it out at the top.

In Dropknee Josh Aurisch and Alex Martin showed age has no barriers. Both were on fire, but just needed to find the back up waves. Josh Smith, Adam Cheers, Jake Lightenberg and Thomas Donnelly were all unstoppable.

In the Masters, Anthony Murphy and Tory Mitchell started on top with some sweet pits and pocket spin-to-pits. William Kennedy, too, did some classy spins-to-pits. Daniel Smith returned from a few weeks in Indo and brought back the fight, clocking up some serious barrel time and perfect rolls. Doddzy struggled to find suitable waves without backwash issues, showing the Masters how to get the perfect rinse cycle.

All members need to take note of the following lessons to be learnt from our first comp of the year.
– Competitors make sure you get two good waves in the bank, build on those if you can to improve your position.
– All riders must be proactive watching the running sheet and draw, if you miss your heat that’s your problem.
– Free surfing is NOT to happen in Comp Zone. Points will now be deducted if caught in the comp zone free surfing.
– All competitors are to do minimum of two heats judging (the more you learn in the judging chair, the better your comp surf knowledge will be).

Waves of the day
– Adam Cheers and Josh Smith demonstrated technical riding flips, inverts and float revs
– Rory Hill Groms Final, perfect pocket spin to barrel, 7
– Junior Final, all out war, wave-for-wave. Spins rolls barrels all very clean. Look at more combo manoeuvres.
– Josh Smith, Opens Rnd 1 heat 4, boosted a flip with perfect landing, 8.7
– Adam Cheers, Opens Semi 2, consecutive waves. First wave big tweaked extended invert, 8. Second wave perfectly timed ARS, 8.5. Third wave forward pocket spin, lined up end bowl and massive float reverse, 8.5.
– Jake Ligtenberg, Open Semi 1, combo wave forward, cutty, to stylish invert, 8.5
– Thomas Donnelly, DK Final massive floater, 7.5
– Josh Smith, DK Rnd 1 heat 2, hack-to-pit-to-rev, 8.

Most Improved – Toby Elliott

Comp #2 – Whale Beach – 29/3/15

Words by Club President Dan Webster

We kicked off our second comp of the year at Whaley on Sunday. Small, but fun conditions were what Huey delivered us with a beautifully warm day. Some could say it was like mini Pipeline? Some may say Chopes…

Cam Buckley got wave of the day, scoring the first 10 of the year! He pulled into a nice clean left, bottom turned and spent some quality time in the green room, before speeding out, locking in a double-hand carve and throwing down an El Rollo to finish it off! Cowabungaaaa. It’s safe to say the crowd went wild. The residents of Whale Beach came rushing out of their homes, cheering for joy. It was a great moment.

Anyway, we all had a great time in the sun and plenty of lols were had. Plus Isaac cooked up a storm on the BBQ! Everyone was shredding! Thanks to everyone who helped out, we wouldn’t be able to run things without you! Also, we should all be wearing our new SBC threads next comp! Get frothing! See you all on May 3 at Curly.

El Presidente, out.

Port Stephens District Bodyboarders

Round #8 – 29/3/15

Words by Club Secretary Jules Collins

Port Stephens District Bodyboarders held round Round 8 on Sunday 29th March at our favourite reef break. We were happily greeted by 2-3 feet waves.

With the forecast looking like one of our final NE winds with the right swell for the Summer season, no one went home without a handful of Quality barrels.

A big welcome to our Newest members – Izzak Pettit and Aidan Kershler.
