Champions crowned at NSW Bodyboard Titles

Big surf for the best bodyboarders in NSW.
The NRMA NSW Bodyboard Titles are done and dusted, with the second and final event of the two-event series, wrapping up in difficult and heavy five-to-six foot waves at Kiama Surf Beach.

2014 Open Drop Knee Australian champion Dion Myers (North Boambee Valley) showed why he was a national champion, taking out the Open Drop Knee division. Myers attacked the heaving conditions with reckless abandon and as a result managed to post a respectable heat total of 9.93 (out of a possible 20 points) and get the upper hand against Zachary Armytage (Wombarra) who finished in second.

Blake Tabone (Burrill Lake) took a convincing win in the Senior Men (over-23) posting an excellent 8.4 wave score (out of a possible ten points), besting event one Senior Mens winner Scott Arena (Ettalong), who claimed the runner-up spot. The South Coast bodyboarder unloaded a barrage of aggressive manoeuvres to amass the previously mentioned score and take the win.

Mathew Mytka’s (Kogarah) managed to post a series of mid-range six point waves to claim the Masters division (over-35). As a result the southern Sydney bodyboarder left his closest rival, Heath Werner (Toormina), chasing a 7.74 wave score, which unfortunately never came to fruition.

Shayden Schrader (Port Macquarie) finished his week in style, taking out the Open Mens division. After winning the Junior Mens division on Friday, Schrader managed to carry the momentum into the premiere division and claimed the final with a heat total of 13.67. Schrader performed a handful of giant manoeuvres to take his second title of the event.

All results for the NRMA NSW Bodyboard State Titles, event two, can be seen below.

Total points from this event (Kiama) and event one (Port Stephens) will be tallied and used to select the NRMA NSW Team to represent the state at the 2015 Australian Surf Festival in Coffs Harbour. All bodyboarders who have qualified for the titles can be seen here.

Surfing NSW implemented free club challenges at both State Title events with the winning club from each State Title event claiming $250.00 and the overall winner claiming $500.00. Newcastle Bodyboard Club managed to claim $250.00 for taking out the individual challenge, while Central Coast Bodyboarders nabbed the $500.00 for claiming the overall title.

The main location for event two was Kiama Surf Beach, located in the heart of Kiama, with back-up locations at Bombo, Jones Beach and Werri.

Professional bodyboarder Andrew Lester hosted a coaching clinic at the event site on day two, which explained the fundamentals of bodyboarding to a handful of aspiring bodyboarders.

The NRMA NSW Bodyboard State Titles, event two is proudly supported NRMA, Mazda, Kiama Council, Kiama Tourism, Australian Skin Cancer Clinics, HIF, Carve, Ohana Ocean Athletics and Surfing NSW.
