Australia’s largest bodyboard retailer, Bodyboarders Surf Co (BSC), has closed its doors for good.
Staff were notified last week that all three of BSC’s stores and its online shop would no longer be open for business.
It marks the end of an era for Bodyboarders Surf Co, which was one of Australia’s largest and longest running bodyboard-specific stores.
Established by dedicated bodyboarder Mick Parkhill and his wife Carina in Narrabeen in 1998 as the country’s first bodyboard-only store, the company expanded to three stores nationally with the Narrabeen store being joined by BSC Coolangatta and the Bodyboard Factory in Burleigh Heads.
The company was also responsible for sponsoring more than 150 of the country’s top bodyboarders during its tenure, including Dave Winchester, Matt Lackey, Joe Clarke, Chris James and Lewy Finnegan as well as supported both international and domestic competitions and events.
The closure of BSC comes after fellow bodyboard retailer FLUX Gold Coast shut its doors just seven months earlier and now leaves the surfing hub of the Gold Coast without a bodyboard specific retailer for the first time in 16 years.
Despite the closure, both BSC sponsored clubs, the Gold Coast Bodyboard Club and Sydney Bodyboard Club will remain in operation.
