Andre Botha saves pro surfer Evan Geiselman’s life at Pipeline

Two-time world bodyboarding champion Andre Botha has been lauded a “hero” and “guardian angel” after saving the life of American pro surfer Evan Geiselman after a horrific wipeout at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

Geiselman remains in a stable condition in hospital after a wipeout on a 15-foot Pipeline bomb, followed by a three wave hold down, knocked him unconscious.

According to reports, Botha found him unconscious in the water and quickly began to attempt rescue breathing while swimming him into shore.

Botha was met in the shorebreak by lifeguards as well as pro surfers Mick Fanning, Danny Fuller, Kalani Chapman, Brian Toth and others.

Geiselman regained consciousness after being given CPR the shore. He was later taken to hospital where he is expected to recover from this near-fatal incident.

“Thanks to everyone, especially Andre, he was truly Evan’s guardian angel,” says (Ev’s brother) Eric Geiselman.

“Everyone responded so heroically and our family cannot thank them enough. We also must remember that the conditions were serious and this is what Mother Nature can do.

It was a trademark big day at Hawaii, with renowned Hawaiian surfers Jamie O’Brien and John John Florence taking step-offs on the ski while others braved the risky conditions, with regular wash-throughs from second reef.
