In the latest of the ongoing merry-go-round that is bodyboard sponsor deals, Gold Coast’s Joe Clarke has jumped ship to the Funkshen Bodyboards team.

It will will mark the fourth board brand change in the 29-year-old’s career, after stints with NMD, Versus and, most recently, Custom X.

The signing comes on the eve of the opening round of the 2016 ABA Pro Tour at Duranbah taking place next weekend.

Clarke has place highly on the ABA Tour in recent years, and last week told Riptide TV he has his sights set firmly on the number one spot in 2016.

He said he has already begun working on a Funkshen pro model board which will be released later this year.

“I appeared on Riptide TV last Friday night and really wanted to drop the news live on air, but the timing wasn’t right. I’m really looking forward to riding for Funkshen,” Clarke said.

“They are an Australian company with a proud history, and produce incredible boards. We are already deep into the design process and look forward to the release of my new signature models.”

Joe’s signing comes on the heels of former marquee rider Ryan Hardy leaving the Funkshen team to start his own board company, Hardy Shapes, which will be made and distributed through QCD Boards.

The move also raises questions over the future of Custom X Australia, which is owned and distributed by Limited Edition (also owners of Funkshen and Nomad Bodyboards) and features Australian team riders Jones Russell and Ash Bryant.

Will Jones and Ash move to somewhere else within the Limited Edition empire? Let’s see how all this shakes out.
