The SparkGreen Tahiti Challenge Opening ceremony was held today at Teahupoo, Tahiti where the Top 48 APB Bodyboarders experienced a local traditional welcoming.

The village community of Teahupoo opened its doors to the APB with a ceremony that consisted of the local legend stories, traditional dancing and awelcome speech from the Tahitian Minister of Sports & Education.

The Sparkgreen Tahiti Challenge will commence tomorrow morning at 8:00am 18th April with the trials event, where 40 International and Tahitian athletes will compete at Teahupoo to be one of eight qualifiers into the main event to compete against the world’s best Bodyboarder’s this week.

Forecasts are showing a 3m swell predicted to hit the south shores of Tahiti in the next few days which will create spectacular waves where these athletes will be pushing the boundaries of professional Bodyboarding in the death-defying break called Teahupoo.

World Champions Jared Houston (ZAF), Mike Stewart (HAW), Amaury Lavernhe (REU), Pierre Louis Costes (FRA), Guilherme Tamega (BRA), Ben Player (AUS) and Jeff Hubbard (HAW) were humbled by the welcoming and are extremely excited to back in Tahiti competing after a 12 year hiatus.

The event will run for four days inside the 10 day waiting period which kicks off tomorrow and finishes on May 2nd.
