Team Peru

The team who were flying the flag for national pride during the event was unquestionably Team Peru. It brough back a flavour of the national camradrie we so badly need in the absecence of the ISA world bodyboarding games.

Last year a group of Peruvians attended the Fronton King event. One of the guys fighting for a junior world title was from Peru. Michael Yancen, alias Pilpo, aka Michael Jackson, was a favourite in the event but in the semi finals he made a mistake of priority and came in 5th position.

The effort Team Peru went to to prepare their juniors for El Fronton these year is outstanding. You need to prepare your juniors for a contest at El Fronton, or else.

They helped the kids to train, brought them surfing and went to competitions.

This year we put in a lot of effort to make it happen. We were training a lot with the kids, surfing, surf trips, competitions in Peru. Jose and his team make that happen for the kids. Jose Salazar and his team made it all happen. Michael Yancenn won a pro junior event in Peru and the Iquique competition also. Jose sent Christopher Boayonne to Chile and Brazil to compete.

We come again to the Fronton King, there were many other competitions, we run two competitions in Peru, won one of them for junior division and But only two competitions were valid out of three.

The team is supported by Independent Bodyboards and Jose is the team coach.

“We are dreamers also, bodyboarding dreamers. Our dream was to bring the world cup to our country, Peru. We couldn't accomplish that this year but we are passionate and excited for it one day.”

Team Peru took the Fronton King by storm and now all the world knows who team Peru really is. Peruvian grom Christopher Byonna ? did well in the Vianna competition in 2019 and came third on the junior world tour, the top ranked Peruvian surfer

“He surprised many people,” said Jose, “He beat Jeff Hubbard in a heat. And beat some big guys in Iquique. The big surprise was my partner from Independent Bodyboards Jorge Mutha Servera (check name) and also manager of the team. He went all the way to round 9 from the trials. He made all the event getting barrelled. He only did one rollo.”

Go Team Peru.

And seeing 47 year old Jeff Hubbard win at Fronton it is inspiration to older riders. It is great to see older athletes still wanting to compete in Fronton King.
